Whats wrong with my 93 Acura Legend? I took my car to another city (big mistake) and it was already unreliable. I was driving on the road on my way back and as soon as I eased off the gas, the car started making a funny noise. When I took my foot fully off the gas pedal, it felt like the breaks locked and no matter the speed...the wheels will just stop moving altogether but my car was still on. Step by Step :

Raise the truck and support it on jack stands, then remove the wheel for the control arm/ball joint you are changing.

Disconnect the brake caliper and its mounting bracket if the truck has two-wheel drive--remove their bolts with a wrench, then slip the brake disc off the studs. Unbolt and remove the brake splash shield. Don't let the caliper hang by its hose.

Remove the torsion bar on a four-wheel-drive truck; mark the relationship of the torsion bar and cross-member support, the adjuster bolt to its nut, and the bar's forward end to the control arm. If the truck has four-wheel anti-lock brakes, disconnect the wire bracket from the control arm.

Remove the nuts/bolts connecting the shock absorber's lower end to the control arm and pull the shock out of the truck from below.

Detach the brake hose's bracket from the control arm by removing its bolt, then remove the front stabilizer bar link nut to disconnect it from the control arm; keep its metal washer and rubber bushing nearby.

Compress the coil spring with a spring compressor, following the specific instructions for that compressor.

Separate the control arm from the steering knuckle by removing the cotter pin, loosening the ball stud nut without removing it, and using a puller tool to separate the two parts.

Pull the lower control arm and ball joint from the frame brackets after removing their pivot bolts in the lower cross member.

Raise the replacement control arm and ball joint into position and install its pivot bolts and other fasteners. Make sure the bolts are facing forward so the nuts are at the front, and don't tighten the nuts fully yet.

Guide the control arm toward the steering knuckle with a floor jack, insert the ball joint stud into the hole in the knuckle, install the nut to between 83 and 112 foot pounds, and install a new cotter pin.

Re-connect the stabilizer bar and install the shock absorber.

Connect the torsion bar and anti-lock wire bracket for a four-wheel-drive truck. Re-connect the brake disc and caliper with its mounting bracket on a two-wheel-drive model.

Raise the control arm again with the floor jack until it reaches its normal ride height, and then tighten the control arm's pivot bolts to between 121 and 147 foot pounds.

Re-connect the wheels and skid plate and lower the truck.

To disconnect a torsion bar, install a small puller with its bolt centered on the dimple in the bar's adjustment arm, turn the bolt to relieve all the tension, then remove the bar's adjuster nut and the puller. Push the bar forward through the lower control arm until the rear end clears the cross member and remove the adjuster arm, then pull the bar down and to the rear as far as it will go.

Chapter 15: Changing Your Oil 22 1 Using aftermarket additives: Should you or shouldn't you? You can buy three basic types of aftermarket additives in auto parts stores, each of which is designed to augment the additives in the oil itself (discussed in the "Oil additives" section earlier in this chapter). The first type thickens the oil. The second type loosens junk and dissolves gummy deposits. The third type acts as a friction lubricant to make the oil "tougher" under high extremes of temperature and usage. Remember that most oils that don't advertise the presence of additives already have most of this stuff in them, and no amount of additional additives can improve the performance of oil unless the oil you started with was of the best grade. If you buy a well-known brand, you get all the protection you need in these categories if your engine is in reasonably good shape. If you use API-rated oil of the proper weight and classification and change it often, I'd leave the rest of the additives on the store shelves. They may provide temporary relief if the engine is disintegrating, but they're not a cure for a worn-down, filthy, miserable old engine. Two types of oil are on the market: single-viscosity oil and multi-viscosity oil. (These are also called single-weight and multi-weighty Automakers rate oil viscosity according to the temperature range expected over the oil change period. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the more easily it flows. In 10W-40 oil, for example, the two numbers mean that it's a multi-viscosity or multi-weight oil that's effective over a range of temperatures. The first number, 10, is an index that refers to how the oil flows at low temperatures. The second number, 40, refers to how it flows at high temperatures. The W designation means that the oil can be used in winter. To decide which viscosity to choose, look in your owner's manual for an oil viscosity chart.
